Unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin will defend his belts against welterweight world titlist Kell Brook on Sept. 10 at the O2 Arena in London, organizers announced Friday in a huge surprise. The match comes as a shock because Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions was close to finalizing a deal with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn for Golovkin to defend against middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr.Hearn was also in the process of finalizing a deal with Top Rank for a welterweight unification fight between Brook and Jessie Vargas. But Eubank seemingly got cold feet when it came to fighting Golovkin. The Brook-Vargas deal, meanwhile, became difficult to finalize because, according to Top Rank, Hearn wanted to reduce the money he was going to pay Top Rank by 20 percent after the recent steep devaluation of the British pound. So voila: Golovkin-Brook became a reality. Already blown off for a fall fight by lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, as well as titleholder Billy Joe Saunders and now Eubank, Golovkin needed an opponent. And Brook, looking at taking a smaller share of the money against Vargas, instead elected to go for the bigger fight against Golovkin and agreed to move up to 160 pounds. There is no catchweight for this bout.I cannot tell you how excited I am for this megafight, Hearn said. Ive worked hard with Tom over the years to bring GGG to the U.K. Right here you have the No. 1 welterweight in the world against the No. 1 middleweight in the world -- 36-0 versus 35-0, two of the best on the planet. Its what big-time boxing is all about.Golovkin-Brook will air in the United States on HBO and on Sky Box Office pay-per-view in the United Kingdom.Im very excited to be fighting in front of the great British boxing fans and promise another big drama show against Kell Brook, the 34-year-old Golovkin said.Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) is coming off a crushing second-round knockout of mandatory challenger Dominic Wade on April 23 at the sold-out Forum in Inglewood, California. He has defended his title 16 times -- closing in on Bernard Hopkins division record of 20.Golovkin, of Kazakhstan, has also scored 22 knockouts in a row, owns the best knockout percentage in middleweight title history (.914) and has not gone the distance since winning an eight-round decision in 2008.None of those gaudy statistics discouraged Brook, who has said time and again that he wanted a big fight. Now he has one. This is the fight and the moment I have been waiting for for some time, Brook said. Weve tried and tried to lure the best to come and fight me, and now weve got the best of the best. The No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world is coming to the U.K. When this fight got offered to me, I accepted within minutes, and I cant wait.Loeffler said finalizing the bout was a snap.Everything was great with the Eubank fight, and Eddie was very confident he could close a deal with him. As it started getting into the finer points of the deal he was running into issues with Eubank. By Wednesday he told me he had hit so many roadblocks that he wasnt confident it would happen, Loeffler told ESPN.com.So he said to me, Let me see if Kell Brook would take the fight under the same conditions. And he called me back about two hours later and said Brook will take the fight. He said he offered Kell the same deal he offered Eubank and Kell jumped at it. It took us a day to finalize the agreement and we announced it [Friday].Kell said after his last fight that he wanted to fight Gennady, but I didnt think that was realistic. Eddie said it was back then, and thats what gave him the idea to offer it to him for Sept. 10.Brook (36-0, 25 KOs), 30, of England, traveled to the United States and outpointed Shawn Porter to win a welterweight world title in August 2014. He has made three defenses against lesser opponents since -- knockouts of Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin and Kevin Bizier. All the while he was calling for a big fight.Brook will be moving from 147 pounds to 160 to face Golovkin after a similar move by rival countryman Amir Khan, whom he has not been able to make a deal to fight despite massive public interest in the United Kingdom. On May 2, Khan, a former junior welterweight titlist moved up from welterweight to a 155-pound catchweight to challenge Alvarez for the lineal title and got knocked out in brutal fashion in the sixth round in Las Vegas.Brook said moving up two weight divisions wont be an issue for him against GGG. Even if he loses, he would still have a welterweight title and could return to the division to defend it.Everyone knows Im a huge welterweight, and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights, Brook said. This is the ultimate fight, one of the biggest international fights the country has seen in many years. You have seen some huge names run from GGG, but Im running to him. Im a special fighter and I will show the world on Sept. 10.Loeffler said he commended Brook for his willingness to tangle with an opponent so many have avoided.Kell is coming up in weight, but Gennady is going to Kells country. Kell is the one who finally stepped up to fight Gennady, Loeffler said. We tried to make Carl Froch [at super middleweight a couple of years ago]; we reached out to Billy Joe Saunders to unify. We said we would go to England to fight and him and he would have gotten his biggest purse, but he wouldnt take the fight. Then we went through this exercise with Eubank and now were here with Kell Brook. We have an undefeated welterweight champion and the best welterweight in the world willing to move up to face the best middleweight in the world, and the best middleweight in the world is willing to go to Kell Brooks country to defend all of his belts. They both had the same problem. Kell Brook could not get the big welterweight names to fight him like we could not get the big middleweight names to fight Gennady. This solves the problem for both fighters and creates and massive event.Said Hearn: I couldnt be happier for Kell. We have pushed for that big name for a long time with many reluctant to step into the ring with him, and now this is the ultimate challenge, the biggest fight of 2016, and I cant tell you how happy I am to bring it to the U.K. Sept. 10 is going to be an incredible night at the O2. Its a special night for British sport and we will provide a packed show with multiple world title fights and some of the biggest names in British boxing.

TROON, Scotland -- When the likes of Tom Morris, James Braid and various other designers laid out their courses along the sea in places all over Great Britain and Ireland, there is no way they could foresee the game that exists today, one fraught with technological advances that allow players to hit a golf ball short-hop plane distances.Of course, there were no airplanes back when they laid out these links, mostly by shaping the existing land with the help of horses, mules and rudimentary tools. Morris, who won The Open four times using an early gutta percha ball (he was a ball maker as well as champion golfer and course designer) would trip over his wooden-shafted clubs at the sight of a Dustin Johnson tee shot. And somehow these courses of a bygone era have withstood the test of time. Sure, theyve been tweaked and lengthened and some would say tricked-up, but a place such as Royal Troon has been around for more than 100 years and will undoubtedly give players fits when the 145th edition of The Open begins Thursday. The likes of Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson -- each in the top 3 in the PGA Tours strokes gained off the tee statistic -- might well have their issues, even though the 7,190-yard course might be considered short by todays standards. You do have to know how to navigate and kind of plot your way around these courses, especially when its dry, said Zach Johnson, who won The Open at St. Andrews last year. I just think the beauty of this tournament and this style of links golf is youve got to have everything. Youve got to hit your driver higher. Youve got to hit it low. Youve got to hit it left. Youve got to hit it right. And that goes with every club in your bag.Youve got to hold it. Youve got to use the wind. Youve got to do everything. ... This tournament, more than anything, I think its purity.Zach Johnson is a perfect example of a player who can excel on such a layout without the length that the likes of Jason Day or McIlroy or U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson have.It was Dustin Johnson who led The Open through 36 holes last year at St. Andrews, only to post 75-75 and fall out of contention over the final 36.I love coming over and playing links golf, said Jordan Spieth, who missed a playoff by a shot last year at St. Andrews. I think my game in general over the course of the next 20 to 30 years out here will show that this style of golf plays to my strengths. I feel comfortable playing this style of golf.Links is a term often tossed around haphazardly, almost generically, to describe any golf course -- and it is done so incorrectly. Links is not interchangeable with any golf course. There are various definitions, sometimes not easily explained, but Golf Digests description is simple: A course on oceanside sand dunes that were formed by a receding sea and covered by fertile soil from a river estuary. Each of the venues used for The Open -- now officially nine -- has those aspects. Royal Troon hugs the Firth of Clyde, and while that body of water is not visible from every part of the course, it has an impact, whether it be wind or rain. AAnd the hard ground, even in wet conditions, typically drains to allow for more bounce and roll.ddddddddddddThe Open was first played at Royal Troon in 1923, and this will be the ninth time it is staged here. The place hasnt changed a great deal over that time. When Todd Hamilton won here 12 years ago in a playoff over Ernie Els, the winning score was 10 under par. Just 15 yards have been added to the course since then. When Arnold Palmer won here in 1962, the length was 7,045 yards, just 145 yards shorter than today.Their defense is the bunkers, so for me its all about just navigating the bunkers, Dustin Johnson said. In spots its very playable, so just knowing where to hit it and not driving it in a bunker, thats the biggest key. If you can stay out of the bunkers this week, I think youre going to do pretty well.Johnson should be able to fly a good number of them, especially on the downwind holes. The first seven holes, typically, come with a helping wind, and Johnson is able to get his tee shot near or on par-4 greens at the first and third holes. Hell have short irons into the others before the links turns back home and a strong headwind becomes a big factor.I think the beauty of a links golf course is the weather makes a massive difference, said Martin Slumbers, the chief executive of the R&A, which conducts The Open. The way the ball moves on the fairways, depending on how firm it is, the ability to control that. The ability to make sure where you want to put the ball versus where the ball has to finish on the green. I think that protection, and then you add in the weather is what makes links golf so difficult and so different and provides more than enough challenge for the players.I find it fascinating going around this course, watching the different type of holes and the different way the guys are playing it. There isnt one way to play it. You can quite often see in a three-ball three different shots, completely different ways how theyve seen how they want to play it, and I think thats the beauty of links golf.None of this is to say that Dustin Johnson, or Day or McIlroy or Watson or any of the other games long hitters, cant succeed at Troon. Its a fantastic asset to have, said Colin Montgomerie, who noted that Dustin Johnson will have no problem carrying various hazards. Thats an advantage, theres no question. Id love to have played my career where he hits his drives; we all would. But at the same time, if that driver is slightly off and the pin positions are as theyre going to be, which are hidden and on slopes to protect the course, these links courses ... you can get into trouble, theres no question. Youve got to be very, very careful at the same time. I dont think its a bombers course as such.I think our motto here, Tam arte quam marte, as youre all aware of course as journalists and English scholars, you would know that its not just with strength but with skill. So you have to have both. This course demands both.
