DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers and their fans waited six seasons for Rick Porcello to have the breakout year they believed was his destiny. On Friday night, they finally got to see it.Porcello, pitching for the first time at Comerica Park as a member of the Red Sox, allowed two runs in seven innings as Boston beat Detroit 10-2.It was fun. Honestly, Porcello said in his usual low-key way. I think it helped that I pitched against those guys at Fenway last year and we came here last year, even though I didnt pitch. It was still weird being on the opposite side, though.Porcello is 17-3 with a 3.22 ERA, which no one appreciates more than his teammates. We gave him four runs in the first inning, and then he just did what he has done for us all year, said Hanley Ramirez, who drove in four runs. When we need a win, we know hes going to get us one. We had a tough loss yesterday, and he came out and shut them down.Porcello appreciated the early help, as both David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit two-run homers off Michael Fulmer in the first inning.Thats huge, especially against a guy who has been pitching as well as Michael, Porcello said. Its always easier to pitch with a cushion, especially against that offense.Porcello allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight. His only major mistake was J.D. Martinezs two-run homer in the second inning. It looked like he had a little extra power on the fastball tonight, and Im sure some of that was being back here, Red Sox manager John Farrell said. You are always going to be pumped up when you go back to a place where you played for a long time. The Tigers have lost nine of 12 after winning 10 of 11.It is a roller coaster, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Ive gone through this every year of my career -- 25 years now. You have ups and downs.Fulmers Rookie of the Year campaign hit a snag, as the Red Sox got a career-high six runs off him in 5 2/3 innings. Fulmer (10-4) allowed 10 hits, including two homers, and walked one while striking out one. They are a fastball-hitting team, and they were ready for my fastball, Fulmer said. It felt like every time I went inside, they were on it.According to Bradley, that was indeed Bostons plan.Hes a very good pitcher who is very aggressive, he said. We wanted to attack him right away.Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the first with his 22nd career homer at Comerica Park -- a blast deep into the stands in right field. Ortiz has hit more homers in Detroit than in any other ballpark outside the AL East.Bradley gave Boston a four-run lead with the second two-run homer of the first inning, but Martinez pulled the Tigers within 4-2 with his two-run shot. Both pitchers settled down after that, and the score didnt change until the sixth. Fulmer retired the first two hitters, but base hits by Sandy Leon and Brock Holt put runners on first and second. Andrew Benintendi and Dustin Pedroia followed with RBI singles to knock Fulmer out of the game.Ramirezs two-run double off Bruce Rondon made it 8-2 in the seventh, and he added another two-run double in the eighth off Mark Lowe.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (hamstring) threw in the bullpen Friday and remains on pace to start Sundays series finale. ... RHP Steven Wright (shoulder) is expected to miss at least one more start, but could start throwing off a mound this weekend.Tigers: RHP Mike Pelfrey (back) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session before the game, and is scheduled to throw another on Sunday. He would then progress to a simulated game before reporting to the minors for rehab games.MARTINEZ LOCKED INJ.D. Martinez hit a long home run in his first at-bat, but his second one might have been even more impressive. He hit a line drive to the left side that ripped the webbing out of shortstop Xander Bogaerts glove on its way to the outfield. Bogaerts had to call time to get a new glove from the Boston dugout.SPIRIT OF CESPEDESWhile Yoenis Cespedes wasnt at Comerica Park on Friday night, he certainly had a major impact on the game. Before the 2015 season, the Tigers traded Porcello to the Red Sox for Cespedes, then shipped him to the Mets at the trading deadline for Fulmer. Both trades were made by then-Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski, who was back in town Friday in his new role as Red Sox president.UP NEXTThe teams play the third game in their four-game series Saturday night with Bostons Drew Pomeranz (9-9, 2.99) facing Daniel Norris (1-1, 3.47). Norris is 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in two career outings against Boston, one of which was a start.

With 1:14 to go in overtime, Davis sixth block also became his 17th rebound. That, along with his 32 points -- which tied a career high -- proved too much for Denver to overcome, and the Pelicans held on for their third straight victory, 111-107 on Sunday night.

It is no secret that trainer Jimmy Takter has enjoyed great success in the Hambletonian Stakes. The 55-year-old Hall of Famer has won the race four times, including each of the past two years, and would become the first trainer in history to three-peat with a win on Saturday. A victory would also give Takter a record-tying fifth triumph, putting him in the company of Stanley Dancer, Billy Haughton and Ben White in that elite club. But what is the secret to his success? The secret, I think, is to stick with what you normally do, Takter said. Most trainers, including me when I was younger, start thinking about it and changing stuff and doing things differently. People start over-doing things, train the horses maybe a little harder, or whatever. I dont think thats smart. I think thats where experience comes in.The horse has no clue its the Hambletonian. The driver and trainer, yes. But the horse has no clue.Takter will send five horses into Saturdays $1 million Hambletonian for 3-year-old trotters at the Meadowlands Racetrack: Bar Hopping, Lagerfeld, Love Matters, Jimmy William, and Reigning Moni. The Hambletonian format calls for any eliminations to be contested the same day as the final. A total of 18 horses entered this years event, requiring two eliminations from which the top five finishers in each division advance to the final. The winner of the final is the Hambletonian champion.Bar Hopping is regarded as Takters top contender and holds the distinction of being the only horse to win a race in which Southwind Frank competed. Bar Hopping won a division of the New Jersey Sire Stakes last year when Southwind Frank went off stride and in June defeated Southwind Frank by a neck in their elimination for the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial.Southwind Frank, who has won 16 of 18 lifetime starts and earned $1.20 million for trainer Ron Burke, is the expected Hambletonian favorite.Bar Hopping, who missed nearly two months of action last year because of sickness, has won three of 17 career races and hit the board a ttotal of 12 times.dddddddddddd He heads to the Hambletonian off a win in the Dr. Harry M. Zweig Memorial Main Event on July 24 at Vernon Downs. At least we know hes challenged [Southwind] Frank, Takter said. He beat him fair and square earlier this year. Maybe [Southwind] Frank wasnt at his best. Last year I thought he was very outstanding. But Ronnie is a professional and knows what he is doing. Im sure he is going to have his horse ready as a contender.Lagerfeld was last years Pennsylvania Sire Stakes champion. Jimmy William was limited to one start last season and Love Matters joined Takters stable late in 2015. Reigning Moni punched his ticket to the Hambletonian with a 7-3/4 length win in 1:52 4/5 last Friday in a conditioned race at the Meadowlands. This year I had a bunch of 3-year-olds that I liked early as 2-year-olds, but every single one of them got sick, Takter said. It was a disaster year with the 2-year-olds. I never had a 2-year-old group get sick so much.Takter won his first Hambletonian with Malabar Man in 1997. He won again with Muscle Massive in 2010, then Trixton in 2014 and Pinkman in 2015. He also was the driver of Trixton. The Hambletonian is the biggest race we have, Takter said. No matter how many times you win it, you get that kick out of it. I love to win the big races. Those are my moments. But its also a heck of a race for a horses resume. Pinkman was a gelding, but it was huge for Trixton and Malabar Man and Muscle Massive. Youre set as a stallion if you win that race. The $225,550 U.S. Pacing Championshjp, $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks and $1 million Hambletonian will be featured during a live 90-minute broadcast on CBS Sports Network from 4-5:30 p.m. (EDT) on Saturday.
