NEW YORK -- Mark Sanchez is still focused on coming back this season for the New York Jets. Coach Rex Ryan thinks it could happen. Sanchez, hurt in the teams third preseason game, is rehabilitating his injured right shoulder rather than immediately having season-ending surgery. The exact nature of the injury has not been revealed, although some published reports say it is a torn labrum. "If we didnt think itd be realistic that Mark would get on the field, then he would be put on IR," Ryan said Friday. "And thats not the case." Sanchez visited Dr. James Andrews this week to take another look at his shoulder, a decision that was agreed upon mutually by the team doctors and the quarterback. In an interview with NFL Network before the Jets 13-10 loss to the Patriots Thursday, Sanchez said he was not planning on having surgery anytime soon, but instead wanted to continue to rehabilitate with his sights set on playing again this year. Before the game at Gillette Stadium, Sanchez threw passes left-handed while warming up with the rest of the team. "Hes doing a great job in rehab," Ryan said, "and our doctors and our trainers are pleased." Sanchez appeared to have an edge in the tightly contested quarterback competition after rookie Geno Smith struggled with three interceptions in the preseason game against the Giants. But, Ryan decided to play Sanchez in the fourth quarter of that game, a call for which the coach has taken a lot of criticism since it was in garbage time when Sanchez took a crunching hit from Marvin Austin. In the interview with NFL Network, Sanchez said he was disappointed by the injury because he felt he undoubtedly beat out Smith for the starting job. Ryan, however, has never declared a winner in the competition. "As a competitor, I guess thats what you expect," Ryan said. "You want your players to believe that. If you dont believe in yourself, nobody else will. I certainly would expect that from any competitor, to think that theyre winning the job. "His comments about that he clearly thinks he won the competition or whatever, thats his opinion." ---- NOTES: Ryan had no update on DL Muhammad Wilkerson, who injured his right ankle late in the game. The Jets are hoping its not a high ankle sprain. Wilkerson was seen leaving the locker room with heavy ice packs on his ankle. ... After benching CB Dee Milliner, the teams top draft pick, Ryan would not commit to starting him against Buffalo next Sunday. "I dont know," Ryan said. "Well see." Milliner was replaced by Kyle Wilson and Darrin Walls against the Patriots. "At that time, I just thought it was best that, hey, you know what, sit him down, let him watch it and well go with more experience out there," Ryan said. ... Ryan hopes to have WR Jeremy Kerley back against the Bills after he missed the game Thursday night with a concussion. Charles Tapper Womens Jersey . In an unexpected move, the FIA announced F1s stakeholders had voted unanimously to introduce a more dramatic version of F1s three-part knockout qualifying system. The new format, which will see the slowest cars eliminated on a more regular basis through the one hour session than is currently the case, is aimed at increasing unpredictability and, pending final ratification, could be introduced as early as this season, which begins in Australia on March 18-20. Symonds, Williams experienced chief technical officer, reckons that while the changes may not actually improve the Saturday spectacle, Sundays race should benefit. Were certainly need to spend a lot more time thinking about it, he told reporters at the Barcelona test.I dont think its going to improve qualifying itself - in fact, I think qualifying might be not as exciting and not build up to that final crescendo. But what there is a good chance of doing is improving the race because its quite a difficult situation and has been done at very short notice, so were not going to have a lot of time to get our thoughts together and optimise anything and write loads of software to help us optimise it.So I think all of us are going to make mistakes, particularly early on. So that means there will be occasions when cars are out of position and so you will see some of the quicker cars a bit further back.We all know that has given us some great races in the past. Ted Kravitz takes you through everything that happened on the third day of Formula 1 pre-season testing.dddddddddddd McLarens Eric Boullier agreed that qualifying would not become even more intense for teams, but is confident they have the resources in place to ensure they are not caught out.Its extra pressure for everybody - for the drivers and the team itself, he said. Its true that we have to be very coordinated and we cant release the car or ask the drivers to do their lap time at the wrong time anymore, we have no flexibility. Lewis Hamilton hopes fans benefit from the qualy changes We have enough resources and already a big strategy group between Woking and the pitwall so thats going to be taken into consideration and we have to deal with it.World champion Lewis Hamilton said on several occasions last season that he would welcome a change in F1s race weekend format, but the Briton doesnt believe the changes announced this week represent a revolution.I dont really feel like its going to change much, to be honest, Hamilton said. But I hope its a surprise for us all and it does. Generally the format is the same, I guess it just puts more focus on getting your laps in and keeping people out all the time.Hopefully it will be good for spectators. The first race of the 2016 F1 season, the Australian GP, is exclusively live on Sky Sports F1.
